Mahan Animal Clinic

Our staff treats you and your pet like family from the moment you walk in the door. We always ensure that you are well informed about your pet’s care and are comfortable with the decisions being made. We provide a variety of services including medical checkups and procedures, boarding, and providing supplies.

Mahan Animal Clinic was founded in 1998, and Dr. Scott Pliskin took over sole ownership in 2000. Since its founding, we have striven for exemplary care and service. We are happy to welcome your questions regarding any health or behavioral issue your pet may be experiencing, including exotic animals.

Dr. Pliskin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Education and spent five years teaching in public schools in his native New York City, and later in South Florida.

Se habla español! Dr. Pliskin received his training in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City.

Dog immunizations include Rabies, Bordetella (kennel cough), and DAPPLV|C, which includes Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis, and Coronavirus. We also test for intestinal worms and heartworms.
Cat immunizations come in two categories, indoor and outdoor. Indoor-only cats get immunizations for Rabies and FVRCP, which includes Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus Infection, and Panleukopenia (feline distemper). Cats that are allowed outside get an extra immunization: Feline Leukemia. We also test cats for intestinal worms.

We are proud to be carrying Royal Canin prescription pet food. If your pet has any specific dietary needs or health concerns, we will be happy to make a recommendation based on those needs and order foods to suit your pet. We carry food specialized for Urinary, Gastrointestinal, Diabetic, Renal, Hypoallergenic, among others, for both dogs and cats. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s diet, Dr. Pliskin will be happy to help.

We provide a wide range of internal medicine including cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, etc.  We also provide a wide range of surgical procedures, including spay/neuter, mass removal, and laceration repairs. We use modern anesthetic and oxygen catered to your pet’s specific needs. Recovery is monitored closely by our staff and most times your pet is available for pick-up on the same day.

Boarding for our patients, whether you’ll just be gone for the night or multiple days. Our staff will see to the care of your pet. We accept all kinds of pets, from cats and dogs, to ferrets, rabbits, rodents, and reptiles. Dogs are taken out three or more times a day (even on weekends) and given ample attention. Cats are often let out to stretch their legs and get them more comfortable in the clinic. If your pet has special medical or care needs, just let us know and we will see that they are met. If your pet has a special diet or can’t be without his favorite toy, feel free to leave it! We do ask that all boarders are up to date on vaccinations and that drop-off and pick-up be done during our regularly scheduled hours.

Your pet’s teeth are important, and proper care of them is essential to overall health. Excessive tartar and plaque build-up on your pets’ teeth can cause a plethora of health issues. During a dental, your pet will be anesthetized to prevent discomfort. Then our staff will clean them with an ultrasonic scaler, polish them and freshen the breath with fluoride foam. In some major cases, extractions may be necessary to prevent further infection and decay. In such cases, an antibiotic and/or pain medication may be necessary and administered.

In addition to common pets like dogs and cats, we will see to the care of “any animal that will fit through the door” to quote Dr. Pliskin!  Common exotic pets we see include rabbits, ferrets, birds, pigs, chickens, reptiles and rodents. We also get various animals visits from pet stores like Petco, who bring us everything from snakes and lizards to mice and rats.  We offer vaccines based on your pet’s specific requirements, and we have extensive knowledge of what vaccines are needed for all the different species.

We carry several different products for flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal parasite protection, including: Trifexis, Comfortis, Nexgard, Bravecto, Interceptor Plus and Frontline (for cats only). We always have these in stock in all sizes.

You and your pet will benefit from our well-stocked pharmacy. We maintain a large inventory of veterinary pharmaceutical products and medications, including flea, tick, and heartworm preventive products.

We have a rescue dog. He is terrified of “new” people, and will often cower and shake when introduced to new experiences. We rarely go out of town, but when we do have to go on a trip, we always board him here. When we picked him up after his very first stay, he appeared happy and comfortable. Every time we’ve had to drop him off, he’s completely fine with it! I feel comfortable leaving him here, because I know they are treating him with patience and kindness.

I really love them. They handle my pets with care and they treat them like family. Not only that, but they care about your pet more than your pocket book. They work with you. I was recommended to them by my neighbor and since then I’ve got 3 of my friends to go. They all love it! We all drive from the other side of town.

We’ve been coming to Dr. Pliskin since the day the Mahan Animal Clinic opened, and I heartily recommend him for veterinary services. I appreciate the caring attitude of him and his staff and trust his judgment — there’s never a feeling of being “pushed” or guilted into a treatment or test. There’s nothing fancy about the facility, but I know everyone there will do their best to assure the good health of my companion animals and provide compassionate care during the difficult times.
